When I turned round to drive off noticed that every light on the dash was on and the computer was scrolling through fault messages e.g. Engine fault, gearbox fault, DSC not available, suspension fault, brake fluid low and it just went on and on. But the car was running and driving fine. Turned it off and it wouldnt restart for a few minutes.

To a degree it's a matter of opinion but from my prospective I have only owned one 5.0 V8, which I had for over two and a half years, it had a full service history, which I kept up and was in excellent condition. However, it developed the timing chain rattle over a period of time nonetheless.
This is why you are seeing two different approaches to the problem. No audio would tend to indicate a connection problem. Check all your fuses first as it sounds like you shorted something out, did you turn the jag off before connecting the jump leads, if you did you will be ok but if you did not it is more than likely a fuse. hope thishelps.
